Just ran into this over at GuitarNoize (got to plug another Aussie whenever I can). Axewar may be an ugly site, but it sure does have some awesome guitar pictures. Pit your guitar against some all time classics and see who comes out on top.
With over a 1000 guitar images already uploaded, there is plenty there for comparison. The concept is simple, you are shown two guitars at random, and you click on the one you like best. Easy, even for a drummer.
It looks like it’s all a case of poopy pants on Gibson’s part after Activision announced they would not be renewing the licensing deal with Gibson. As stated in an Activision statement:
As Activision noted in its filing, Gibson waited three years to make its patent allegations, and only did so after it became clear that Activision was not interested in renewing its marketing and support agreement with Gibson. Activision continues to believe that Gibson’s claims are disingenuous and lack any justification.
This leaves the next title in the series - GuitarHero:Aerosmith - in a strange predicament as Joe Perry is a Gibson endorsee and is known for his love of Gibson and it’s related companies guitars.
Guitar World have released their Guitar World Tabs beta site and it may be the first legal tabs site out there. It features both the tabs they publish in their magazine in a non downloadable format, as well as user submitted videos and tabs.
I am very curious at how the user submitted tabs are handled. Do they publish everything, or does it have to run by the publishing companies to get approval first? I find it very odd that the publishing companies are allowing these tabs to run while shutting down every other tab site out there. I would have to assume there is some sort of advertising or revenue splitting agreement. But if they are willing to do that here why not offer it to somewhere like Ultimate Guitar? Guitar World will never catch up in terms of tab quantity or community participation as UG. UG has a much larger user base and potential marketing audience and surely that is enough for them to start thinking about ways to collaborate and not go all RIAA on the sites.
Do you think GW’s Tabs site will last? Or is it only a matter of time before the music publishers realise that they won’t make any money there and eventually pull their support? What do you think?
Jason over at Atomic Guitarist seems a pretty cool guy, trying to come up with ideas to help out these humble guitar blogs. His idea to exchange all these links is two fold.
1. Lets us and our readers find other guitar blogs
2. Google Page Rank assistance from many relevant links
So if you read this blog, please check out the other sites as well, and if you write on one of these blogs, please give back andpost these links on your site. I’ll be adding the ones I don’t have shortly to my blog roll as well. And where ever you find this project on, give that tsite the trackback as well.
Surely if you play guitar you have seen these by now. StSanders Has taken classic guitar footage from our favourite guitar idols and over dubbed the audio. yeah it sounds lame but the skill he has used in making these is great. You would honestly think you were hearing these masters having a really, REALLY bad night.
Although the EVH video is gold, I can’t go past Slash and the talk box. Check these out and know that You tube is good.
