Guitar World Tabs BETA
Guitar World have released their Guitar World Tabs beta site and it may be the first legal tabs site out there. It features both the tabs they publish in their magazine in a non downloadable format, as well as user submitted videos and tabs.

I am very curious at how the user submitted tabs are handled. Do they publish everything, or does it have to run by the publishing companies to get approval first? I find it very odd that the publishing companies are allowing these tabs to run while shutting down every other tab site out there. I would have to assume there is some sort of advertising or revenue splitting agreement. But if they are willing to do that here why not offer it to somewhere like Ultimate Guitar? Guitar World will never catch up in terms of tab quantity or community participation as UG. UG has a much larger user base and potential marketing audience and surely that is enough for them to start thinking about ways to collaborate and not go all RIAA on the sites.

Do you think GW’s Tabs site will last? Or is it only a matter of time before the music publishers realise that they won’t make any money there and eventually pull their support? What do you think?

Gibson release “chambered” Les Paul

Gibson Custom Shop 1968 Les Paul Custom Chambered
From the Gibson custom shop comes this interesting piece. The Gibson Custom Shop 1968 Les Paul Custom Chambered (say that 5 times fast) is the first Les Paul I can recall that features a chambered body. Not only does this make the guitar lighter (my back says thank you), but it is supposed to increase the resonance of the wood, thus providing better tone and sustain.

The finish you see here is an aged Pelham Blue, and some days I like it, some days I don’t. It looks like it should belong on the Robot guitar. Apart from that it’s a standard ‘68 custom.

* Carved maple top
* Chambered mahogany body
* Multi-ply white/black binding on top & back
* Nickel hardware
* ABR-1 bridge, stopbar tailpiece
* 1-piece mahogany neck w/long neck tenon
* 22-fret bound ebony fingerboard
* Pearl block inlays
* Rounded neck profile
* 24-3/4″ scale length, 1 11/16″ nut width
* Kidney bean tuners
* 57 Classic humbucking pickups
* 2 volume, 2 tone, 3-way selector switch
* Includes Custom Shop case, certificate of authenticity, and custom care kit

I just don’t know about the colour, but hopefully it’s a sign that Gibson really are trying to do more practical alterations to their designs rather than going down the expensive add on gadget path like they did with the Robot.

Hey!!!! I know that guitar!!!!! I think…

I know this isn’t an Iceman. OK!!!!
Now here is a list that is an absolute crock of excrement. Blender.com recently published a list of the 28 Most Recognisable Guitars and I have to say it’s pretty obvious they were running out of ideas towards the tale. The way the list has been done is very cool, but the contents is off the mark in several ways.

To me, the guitar is classed as recognisable if you see it and instantly associate it with a particular performer, and no other. Here is the list below, and I’ve bolded the ones I agree with:

You can read the complete article at Blender.com.

There is a real difference between recognising a guitar as the type a particular artist uses, and recognising the exact instrument that was played by the artists, or seeing a guitar and thinking of a musician who’s identity is synonymous with the instrument. An example is that Lots of people play Les Pauls, but there is no confusing which one Zakk Wylde plays. Seeing a black fender Strat is not going to make me think of Eric Clapton instantly.

There are a few guitars that I think are missing from the list, like an Cracked Mirror Ibanez Iceman (Paul Stanley). Can anyone else think of a guitar missing from the list?

More Electro-Harmonix Goodness - Memory Man Stereo

I was going through my YooTube subscriptions and found two new crazy videos from EH. These are for the Menory Man Stereo

This looks like a seriously fun pedal, especially the reverse functions.
